We Oppose the Suppression of Chinese Students

Today I came across yet another news report about U.S. politicians pushing to limit visas for Chinese students, citing so-called “national security threats.” Some are even proposing retroactive scrutiny of those who are already studying here legally. I felt a deep sense of anger—and sorrow. This kind of suppression doesn’t just trample on individual dreams; it betrays the fundamental spirit of academic freedom and human dignity.

We oppose the targeting of Chinese students not out of blind nationalism, but because they deserve fairness. These young people come to the U.S. in pursuit of knowledge, not politics. They work hard, contribute to research, engage with their communities, and enrich campuses with diverse perspectives. They are not “spies.” They are not “threats.” They are students—bridge-builders between cultures, not pawns in geopolitical games.

Cracking down on them will not make America safer. It will only deepen mistrust and further divide the world. A truly strong nation should have the confidence and openness to welcome talents from all backgrounds and allow free exchange of ideas.

Writing this today is my small protest, and my promise to remember: education should never be weaponized. And no one’s dream should ever be extinguished by prejudice.

To every student who crossed an ocean to learn—may your journey be met with respect, not suspicion, and may your light never be dimmed.
