本週六上午10:30，我們將前往德州首府奧斯汀，參加反對德州眾議院第17號法案（HB17）的示威活動。該法案旨在禁止來自中國、俄羅斯、伊朗和北韓等被美國情報機構視為敵對國家的個人和實體在德州購買土地。雖然法案聲稱豁免永久居民和用作主要住所的購買，但許多亞裔美國人擔心這將導致歧視和種族定性。

HB17法案已在德州參議院通過，並正在眾議院進行審議。儘管原定於4月9日進行的投票被推遲，但法案仍在推進中。支持者認為這是出於國家安全考量，而反對者則指出，這可能違反憲法，並對亞裔社區造成不公。

近期，德州的亞裔社區與其他族裔團體聯合舉行了多次抗議活動，反對HB 17和SB17法案。例如，3月30日在奧斯汀的德州議會大廈前，數十人參加了示威活動，表達對這些法案的反對意見。

This Saturday at 10:30 AM, we will head to the Texas Capitol in Austin to protest House Bill 17 (HB 17), a proposed law that would restrict land ownership and leasing rights for individuals and entities from countries deemed adversarial by U.S. intelligence, including China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia. 

HB 17, introduced by Rep. Cole Hefner and supported by over 60 Republican lawmakers, aims to prohibit these foreign nationals and entities from acquiring or leasing property within 10 miles of critical infrastructure, such as airports, military bases, and energy facilities. While the bill exempts U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and certain leaseholds, many in the Asian American community fear it could lead to discrimination and racial profiling.  

The bill is currently pending in the House Homeland Security, Public Safety & Veterans’ Affairs Committee after a scheduled vote was postponed on April 9. 

Recent protests have taken place across Texas, including a rally at the Capitol on March 30, where demonstrators voiced concerns that HB 17 and its Senate counterpart, SB 17, unfairly target immigrant communities and could violate constitutional rights. 

As we prepare to join the protest this weekend, it’s crucial to stay informed, coordinate with organizers, and advocate for policies that uphold fairness and equality for all the residents of Texas.
