The Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts休斯頓表演與視覺藝術高中(簡稱HSPVA)是位于德克薩斯州休斯頓的一所磁校。

Clolumnist Nicole Lee:—Do you dream of being a star?

Are you a middle schooler who dreams of becoming a star? Do you want to perform in Hollywood, play in a professional orchestra, or become a world-renowned singer? If the answer is yes, keep reading. Hello, I’m Nicole Lee and I’m a new columnist for the Southern Chinese News Group. Today, I’ll be sharing a look into my high school, a place where these dreams can become reality. The Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (also known as HSPVA), is a magnet school in Houston, Texas. A magnet school is defined as a public school with specialized offerings. HSPVA is a place for artistic students to focus on improving their art through art area-specific classes. There are five art areas at HSPVA: visual arts, dance, creative writing, music, and theater. Each art area comes with its unique set of classes. In 2025, HSPVA was ranked by Niche as the #1 Best School for the Arts in Texas. HSPVA aims to give students the resources and training they need to excel in their respective fields. Several students have become Grammy Award-winning musicians, Broadway performers, singers, and even comedians. Notable alumni include Beyoncé, Chandra Wilson, Reneé Goldsberry, and many more.

At PVA, each student takes nine classes per year, and four of them are art area classes. I’m in the music department as a violinist in the HSPVA Symphony Orchestra, and the four music classes I take are Conducting, String Orchestra, Chamber Music, and Full Orchestra. The rest of a student’s schedule includes four academic classes, one elective, and an hour-long lunch. HSPVA offers seventeen AP classes, and has the same graduation requirements as any other HISD school. PVA offers a competitive academic environment and is dedicated to ensuring its students are prepared for college. The most popular universities for PVA students are UT Austin, UH, and Rice. In addition, several graduates are accepted to top schools like Stanford, Princeton, and Julliard every year.

Performances are a staple of HSPVA’s culture. With five departments, there are performances nearly every week. There are several chamber music recitals, poetry readings, vocal concerts, pop shows, orchestra concerts, theater productions, band concerts, art gallery showcases + auctions, mariachi concerts, and even more events throughout the year. In addition, HSPVA produces two All-School Musicals every year, one in the fall and one in the spring. These musicals are a chance for students from different art departments to collaborate on a musical. Participation in a musical isn’t limited to a student’s department either. Students from Visual Arts, Music, Dance, and Creative Writing can all audition for any acting role, and vice versa. This year, HSPVA presented “9 to 5” and “Sister Act,” giving two phenomenal performances that attracted an audience from all over Houston and beyond.

Where do all those performances take place? One fun fact about HSPVA is that the current building cost $88 million to build. Some of the spaces spread across its five floors include a theater with an orchestral pit, a recital hall, a black box, a studio theater, an art gallery, a recording studio, and roof terrace. Classes are located on different floors, with the general layout placing math and theater classes on the 2nd floor, history and dance classes on the 3rd, English and creative writing classes on the 4th, music and art classes on the 5th, and science and foreign language classes split between the 3rd and the 4th floors. Students climb up and down the stairs to get to their classes (although some students are permitted to use the elevators), and many students jokingly call it an alternative exercise that makes up for the lack of sports in the school.

Overall, HSPVA is a fantastic school for students who are committed to improving their art and want to experience a conservatory-like environment with other dedicated students. One thing is for sure; HSPVA is serious about its art. The school offers networking opportunities by inviting a variety of top professionals to act as guest speakers and coaches. One of my favorite memories from my sophomore year was performing with my friends at the Wortham Center with the Grammy Award-winning artist group Time for Three. In addition to outside-of-school events, HSPVA is a great environment during school hours as well. The dress code is relaxed, school tours happen regularly, and students can practically start any club they want. The Bread Club is one of the most popular clubs at my school, probably because it gives out free bread to members on meeting days. Throughout the day, visitors in the school can hear the sounds of singing, woodshopping, orchestral music, and even more flowing through the halls.

Want to attend HSPVA? Submit an audition first. For the first round of evaluation, students have to complete an application and submit an audition video (and other application materials depending on the art area). If they pass the first round, they will be invited to the school to audition in-person. Students can audition for one or two art areas. Once accepted, four years of art training and fun awaits!
