Chicago Under The Shadow Of The “War Department”
President Donald Trump recently signed an order to symbolically rename the Pentagon as the “War Department” and threatened Chicago on social media, even sharing an AI-generated “Chipocalypse Now” image evoking scenes of war. He warned that the city would soon “feel the power of the War Department.”
In reality, only DHS and ICE personnel have been deployed, mainly operating from the Great Lakes Naval Station. No formal order has been issued for National Guard or active-duty troops to enter the city.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson strongly condemned the move as unconstitutional. Veterans and Guard members have also voiced opposition, arguing that the military should not be used as a tool of domestic law enforcement.
The “War Department” label is less a policy shift than a political performance designed to project strongman authority. Yet its shadow has already placed Chicago at the center of America’s constitutional tensions and deepening divides.
