"Son of Taiwan" or "Shame of Taiwan"

When Chen Shui-bian became the new democratic President of Taiwan in 2000, he was so proud he called himself a "Son of Taiwan." Eight years later, he has now admitted that he
lied about the campaign expenses for his two mayoral elections and two presidential election between 1993 and 2004, and that his wife wired the campaign surplus money to a Swiss Bank.

Chen's confession came after the Swiss government began an investigation into possible money laundering based on the large amount of money put into the foreign bank account. Prosecutors searched Chen's home and office in Taipei for evidence in connection with the case, and now the ex-president has been prohibited from leaving the country.

While out of the country and visiting the Dominican Republic, President Ma Ying-jeou said that he feels sorry about the scandal in which ex-president Chen is accused of depositing large sums of cash in overseas bank accounts, commenting that it is as disgraceful and reminds people of Ferdinand Marcos, the corrupt ex- President of Philippines. He said, "I am really so ashamed to talk about it."

Taiwan's new government will continue to prosecute this case and most people believe Chen should put in jail.

This is also the "Shame of Taiwan," as a new emerging democratic nation.
