Ex-President of Taiwan
Apologizes for Hiding Funds |
|
|
|
|
Former Taiwan
President Chen Shui-bian made a public apology for keeping a
huge amount of secret money in a foreign bank, allegedly for
money laundering purposes.
KMT legislator Hung Hsiu-chu
said?that Chen used his daughter-in-law Huang Jui-ching's name
to put 10 million U.S. dollars into a Swiss Bank. Swiss
prosecutors had already frozen the money and had asked Taiwan
authorities to verify the origins of the huge amount of money
deposited in the name of Huang who has no job, and whose father
is a local credit union worker.
The Foreign Ministry of Taiwan
confirmed that the Swiss government has request the Taiwan
government’s assistance in the money laundering case.
In a statement issued by Chen, he
claim this is leftover campaign money, but lawmakers
said the former Taiwan leader got the money from a government
fund. He also said that
former President Lee Teng-hui also had wired 30 million U.S.
dollars abroad in the names
of other people. Chen insisted that his wife had made the wire
transfers without his knowledge.
This huge scandal has created a
political storm in Taiwan. For a young democratic country
like Taiwan, it is a joke that all the ex-presidents are getting
involved in money laundering cases. |
