Ma Will Try to End "Check Book"
Diplomacy |
|
|
|
|
Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou left Taipei for Los Angles
Tuesday for an overnight layover en route to his first official
visit to Central and South America.
Ma will hold no impromptu press conferences or make any public
statements during his stopover in the United States. He will try
to repair the relationship with Washington which in recent years
resulted in only a lack of mutual trust. His trip will include
attending the inaugurations of Paraguayan President-elect
Fernando Lugo and Dominican Republic President-elect Leonel
Fernandez.
After Ma took office, he declared that he would seek a
"diplomatic truce" with China in an attempt to end the so called
"check book" diplomacy which has been conducted on both sides of
the Taiwan Strait. This trip will also be a touchstone for China
and Taiwan as to whether or not they will be able to end their
"money" diplomacy in the international arena.
When Ma returns to Taiwan, he will also stopover in Austin,
Texas and San Francisco. We hope that this trip will really
create a milestone for the Taipei and Beijing relationship. |
