Olympic Torch Paraded in Beijing

When the Olympic flame paraded through the streets of Beijing, it marked a final step for China, after seven years of preparation for the games, of a journey which cost billions of dollars as the communist government hopes to become a modern world power.

In Beijing, thousands of people greeted?the torch with very tight security. The torch will tour
the Chinese capital before ending up at the opening ceremony for the games. The carriers of the torch include Chinese astronaut, Yang Liwei, movie director, Zhang Yimou, and basketball super star, Yao Ming.

Astronaut Yang said in an interview that, "the torch finally reaching Beijing is a realization of a dream we have had for one hundred years." Yao Ming carried the torch from the gate of Tianamen Square passing under a giant photo of Mao Zedong.

In Beijing, the route was very tightly guarded by police and military personnel. Nearby, at the Forbidden City, lion dancers danced on a huge stage, and thousands of people lined the streets to cheer on the torchbearers, which, in total, involved 841people.

We also feel that this historical event will help China develop into a modern country, while giving the world a chance to also see China. We hope the Chinese government will begin to open its door wider in the future. China will surely be one of the major players on the world stage.
