Taiwan's Former President Went
to Court |

Taiwan's former
President went to city court recently to testified in a libel
case brought against him. Outside the courthouse an angry man
kicked the former president in the rear as he passed by. Angry
opponents also shouted at him at the same time.
Chen Shui-bian left the Taiwan
presidency in May and many corruption cases revolving around his
presidency are still waiting for trial. His party lost the
presidential election to the Nationalist Party's Ma Ying-jeou.
Today's libel suit was filed by
retired National Admiral Lei Hsueh-Ming, who is demanding
U.S. $66 million in compensation. Chen told reporters in 2005
that Lei took $20 million in bribes
in a $2.7 billion deal to buy French-made frigates.
The deal turned into a scandal in
1993 following the death of a Taiwanese navy captain who was
believed to have been killed because he was about to blow the
whistle on who allegedly took kickbacks.
Until now only one junior navy
official has been convicted in the case. |
