Myanmar Open Its Door To Help
Survivors |

Visiting U.N.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, "Myanmar will allow all aid
workers into
the country to help cyclone survivors." A senior U.N. official
present in the meeting said that
the Myanmar's junta also gave the green light for foreigners to
work in the hardest-hit region,
the Irrawaddy delta, which before has been virtually off-limits
to them.
Myanmar's military government has until now refused to allow any
influx of foreign aid and impeded travel of experts to reach
survivors of the May 2-3 Cyclone Nargis. At least 78,000 people
were killed and other 56,000 are missing, while some 2.5 million
survivors are at risk
from disease.
At the United Nations in New York, France pushed for a U.N.
resolution authorizing the delivery
of aid to survivors by all means necessary. As Ban's visit
proceeded, the regime appeared to ease some of its restriction
on foreigners.
We are glad this move will help more than 3 million people who
desperately need help in that region.
