Relations Between China and Taiwan Are Improving

Chinese officials in Beijing gave their first public response to the inauguration of Taiwan's new president saying that "peaceful development across the Taiwan Strait is the common wish and mutual wish and is of mutual benefit to people both in China's mainland and Taiwan."

Relations between China and Taiwan have seemed to be improving since MA Ying-jeou easily won Taiwan's presidential election in March. He was sworn in as president on Tuesday.

Ma said, "We can resume negotiations and put issues that concern both sides on the agenda. This is an historical opportunity that we should grab to improve the welfare of people on both sides."

The ruling party’s Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung was invited by the Chinese Communist party and will?arrive in Beijing this weekend to pay a visit. Taiwan and China, which split during a civil war
in 1949, have, for many years, banned regular direct flight links and other formal contact. This situation will hopefully soon be changed.

The Taiwanese have been among the first to extend helping hands to China after the deadly earthquake that hit on May 12. Chen Yunlin, director of the Taiwan Work Office of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, praised the selfless assistance from Taiwan, saying it shows
that "blood is thicker than water."

As oversea Chinese, we really want to see the relations between China and Taiwan head in the right direction.
