Schools have
reopened in China's earthquake-hit Sichuan province, but rain
and lack of tents underscored the massive task facing the
government in sheltering millions of homeless.
An officials said it was important for the children to return to
their established routines of school and play to help overcome
the trauma of quake. "We don't want them to feel like refugees,
but like they are simply moved to another place to a sort of
holiday."
After ten days, rescues have slowed down and none have been
reported since Tuesday afternoon, when a when a 60-year-old
woman was pulled from the rubble of a collapsed temple in the
city of PengZhou more more than eight days after the quake.
The confirmed death toll from the quake now stands at more than
40,000 with at least 10,000 more deaths expected. The Chinese
government has begun moving some of the injured to other cities
for treatment.
The earthquake has touched an emotional chord with the Chinese
public, with more than US $1.8 billion dollars in donations from
organizations and individuals.
When the official three-day mourning ended yesterday, a crowd of
2,000 people got together in
front of Tiananmen Square and chantied “go China" to support the
victims of quake.
