Taiwan Opens a New Political Era |
|
|
|
|
Ma Ying-jeou took
over as Taiwan's president Tuesday, urging China to open a new
page of peace and prosperity in the long-strained relationship.
In his inaugural?address, Ma said Taiwan will adopt the
principle of “no independence, no unification and no use of
force.” He stressed that he will be consistent with his
long-standing policies of seeking greater economic engagement
with Beijing, without renouncing Taiwan's
de facto sovereignty. He has proposed beginning direct
commercial flights across the 100-mile-wide Taiwan Strait and
opening the door to a massive influx of Chinese tourists.
Ma is widely known for his honest and thoughtful qualities that
voters of Taiwan are ready to embrace after Chen's presidency of
corruption.
One of the most important issues facing Taiwan is the
relationship with mainland China. We hope that President Ma will
carry on his campaign promise to improve the long-lasting
dispute. We believe the problem cannot remain the political
issue it has been forever, and this is the best time to come to
a solution. With pragmatic leaders like Chinese President Hu
Jintao and Ma Ying-jeou now leading their people, they should
use their mutual wisdom to seek a positive future for China.
