Chinese Stand Still to Remember
Victims |

The people
of China stood still Monday to mourn ten of thousands of
earthquake victims in the country's deadliest disaster in a
generation.
Shopkeepers, construction workers and bureaucrats across the
country of 1.3 billion people paused for three minutes at 2:28
PM Monday, exactly one week after the quake. Air-raid sirens and
horns of cars sounded in memory of the at least 50,000 dead.
The Chinese government said it would now accept foreign medical
teams to help the many injured survivors. In the quake area, at
least 200 road repair workers have been buried in mudslides. The
military was still struggling to reach the area cut off by the
earthquake.
One?rescue worker?said, "Our hearts are so heavy, so?many of our
compatriots are dead, but
as long as we try our best, we have some small hope."
Chinese President Hu Jintao and others were shown on state TV
bowing their heads. Hu had spent three days touring the
worst-hit areas of Sichuan.
All of us here in America send our deepest condolences to the
victims of the earthquake. In the meantime, we will try our best
to help the people rebuild their homes and their lives.
