Taiwanese Rescuers Headed to
China |
|
|
|
|
A team of 22
Taiwanese rescuers departed for quake hit Sichuan Province today
after being permitted to take a direct charter flight to China.
The team is led by Ou Chin-der, former Vice Mayor of Taipei. He
also headed relief efforts in
that city after a magnitude 7.3 quake struck Taiwan on September
21, 1999. That quake brought down a residential building in
Taipei.
The Taiwan team is comprised of rescuers from the Taipei Red
Cross society and includes rescue dogs. The team is very
experienced, having taken part in disaster relief efforts in El
Salvador, Iran and Indonesia.
In the mean time, Chinese President Hu Jintao visited a
collapsed school where a student was rescued Friday more than 80
hours after the earthquake.
Hu told the people in Beichuan that, "We must make every effort,
race against time and overcome all difficulties to achieve the
final victory of the relief efforts."
A lot of angry citizens questioned why so many school buildings
collapsed and destroyed
about 6,900 classrooms. The government will need to closely
investigate the tragedy.
Showing their concern and support, the people all over the world
are pouring money and
material into China to help the many victims. |
